For instance, many agricultural sheds will need to have compartments for livestock and different types of supplies. If your looking for an easy and relatively inexpensive shed foundation to build, then this simple shed foundation is for you.

If your building a small or medium sized shed (up to about 10′ x 6′) on a relatively level ground, then this can be done easily using some form of crushed stone and some pressure treated wooden bearers or sleepers.

  1. Building a shed foundation starts with setting out

Setting out for your new shed foundation is fairly simple. You start by setting out the four corners of the shed using some 2″ x 2″ (50mm x 50mm) timber spikes. I like to place a nail or screw into the center of each of the pegs, then using a simple string line, you can tie it around each nail to highlight the outline (perimeter) of your new shed foundation.

Always make sure that your foundation layout is square. You can easily check this by measuring across the diagonals of your four timber pegs. If the measurement you get across both diagonals is equal, then you have successfully marked out a square foundation. If the measurements are not equal, then simply adjust your pegs.

For a simple shed foundation like this, remember there’s no need to over complicate it. So when it comes to controlling the level of your excavation, all you need is a spirit level and a long straight 4″ x 2″ timber length (about 8′ to 10′ will do nicely).

Next using a spade, strip the initial turf and top soil from your marked area to a minimum depth of about 2″ (50mm).

Once you have the initial layer of turf and soil stripped back, you should dig down in one corner to a finished depth of about 3″ (75mm), then rest the long length of 4 x 2 on top of this peg. Next for the length of the timber needed then measure to the ground level, and cut a piece of timber along this length..

Then as you continue your excavation of the shed, use your long length of 2 x 4, your spirit level and the timber piece you just cut to make sure that your not going to deep with your digging.

  1. Selecting crushed stone for a shed base

Your next step is to fill your new shed foundation with a crushed or graded stone. Normally you would use a “Well Graded Material” for this. This simply means that its a good mix of stone sizes, which normally range from about 40mm downloads. The main reason for using a graded selection of stone, is because a single sized mix won’t compact together properly.

The image below shows you the ideal cross section of a basic shed foundation. You’ll notice that the underside of the timber support is slightly above the ground level. And I’ve also included a timber lawn edging board, which gives the shed foundation a tidy and neat finish.

Tips: Use a landscaping fabric here

The main reason for this is to keep your stone away from your soil, as over a period of time your stone may start to sink into the soil below and in turn could soften your foundation.

Also using a landscaping fabric as a separation layer will prevent weeds and vegetation from growing up beneath your shed foundation. Just make sure that its a good quality landscaping fabric which will allow any water to drain away through it.

  1. Placing the crushed stone layer within your foundation shed
hand tamper

Using hand tamper to compact stone fragments

When it comes to compacting the stone, make sure you level the stone as best you can with a garden rake. If you have the means to hire (or borrow) a vibrating plate, then do so. But if not, you’ll have to use a hand tamper to manually compact the stone yourself (good exercise!!!).

Using the hand tamper you must completely pound the stone beneath you to compact it. Always remember to keep checking the levels as we did above, and add some more stone where needed or remove some if you have too.

  1. Laying your pressure treated wood foundations

Its always important to remember that when your laying down your pressure treated timber foundations, to always lay them perpendicular to the desired direction of your shed floor joists. These pressure treated foundation timbers should be at least 4″ x 4″ (100mm x 100mm). This is important as it allows for enough ventilation beneath your shed to avoid any rot.

And by using lightly pressurized wood, you must first confirm the foundation of the new shed. Later the material will have a long and durable life a shed.

When it comes the the actual spacing between these timber bearers, you should refer to your shed kit, or in the case of a self build (much more fun and stronger) see your shed plans.

To further prolong the life of your shed floor (base), I always lay a plastic or DPM (damp proof membrane) on top of my 4″ x 4″ pressure treated timbers. This will ensure that you stop any moisture bleeding up to your shed floor which are touching these foundation timbers.

Finally owners check quality control a shed finishing

Finally, owners will want to add in a few different customized elements when they consider how to build a shed. There are some models that will feature lighting and cooling systems. These are particularly popular elements to see within expansive shed models.

Owners should check to make sure that the roofing has been designed to help people get the perfect look that they need to see as well. All of these elements will combine to create the best possible design for the shed foundation that needs to be built.

Looking through how to build a shed will help anyone who wants to get more functionality out of their unit as well. It is hard to overstate the importance of creating a shed that can stand up to local the appearance of actual weather conditions can add to the overall property value.
